Research Project: The Multilateral Trade Regime in the Age of "Securitization of Everything"

Professor Kawase received his LL.B. (1990) and LL.M. (1992) from Keio University, and LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center (1994). Prior to joining Sophia University in the fall of 2007, Professor Kawase was an associate professor at Osaka University (2004-07). He has also served as Deputy Director of the Multilateral Trading System Department of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) (2001-2003) and as Chair of the Subcommittee on Trade Remedies, Industrial Structure Council, in METI (2017-2023). His current research examines how the multilateral trade regime can accommodate expanding and evolving new security concerns, including global warming, pandemics, and technology in the context of U.S.-China rivalry and the Ukraine Crisis. He is also interested in the relationship between traditional trade agreements and emerging security-oriented "friendshoring" frameworks.
