Research Project: Binding, Wedging, and Hedging in Japanese Science and Technology Policy

 

Dr. Brummer is an assistant professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo. He earned his Ph.D. from The University of Tokyo, M.A. from Columbia University, and B.S. from Bucknell University. His primary research focus is on the relationship between international security and domestic science and technology innovation. He also studies Japanese foreign policy and how leaders perceive existential threats. His research has appeared in a range of academic and policy journals, including the Journal of Cold War Studies, Defense and Peace Economics, Review of Policy Research, and Foreign Affairs, and he is a primary author of both the “Japan and the World” and “SAAD” datasets. During the 2023-24 academic year, he will conduct research on “Binding, Wedging, and Hedging in Japanese Science and Technology Policy.”
