He is the author of <em>Lever of Empire: The International Gold Standard and the Crisis of Liberalism in Prewar Japan </em>(University of California Press, 2006), which was Short-listed for the International Conference of Asia Scholars (ICAS) Book Award and the Hamilton Book Award Runner-up (2007).
