Research Project: City of Commuters: Work and Mobility in Tokyo, 1890-1973

Brian Rogers received his Ph.D. in History from Princeton University and his B.A. and M.A. in History from the University of Kansas. His main research fields are modern Japanese history, urban history, and the history of transport and mobility. Specifically, he is interested in how modern urban life came to be organized around the separation between home and work. During the current academic year, he plans to complete a book manuscript that traces how Tokyo transformed from a city characterized by practices of live-in work at the turn of the twentieth century, to one dominated by commuting by the end of the 1960s.
