**Associate Professor of History and Asian Studies, University of Texas, Austin**

[Professor Metzler’s](http://www.utexas.edu/cola/depts/asianstudies/faculty/mm5723) research interests include modern Japanese history, global history, and historical political economy. He is the author of *Lever of Empire: The International Gold Standard and the Crisis of Liberalism in Prewar Japan* (University of California Press, 2006), which was Short-listed for the International Conference of Asia Scholars (ICAS) Book Award and the Hamilton Book Award Runner-up (2007). His articles have been published in numerous edited volumes and journals including *Asia Pacific Business Review, Journal of Asian Studies, Journal of Japanese Studies,* and *The Japanese Economy.* His will speak on his forthcoming book: *Capital as Will and Imagination: Schumpeter’s Guide to the Postwar Japanese Miracle* (Cornell UP, April 2013).
